著名妇产科学专家、我国妇产科学奠基人之一、一级教授。1918年8月顺利考取清华大学庚子赔款留学奖学金赴美留学,成为该奖学金出国留学的第一位女医师。1921年获芝加哥大学理学士学位,1925年获美国约翰霍布金大学医学院医学博士学位。
王淑贞满怀“医学救国”的强烈愿望于1926年回到祖国,在上海西门妇孺医院任职,她亲自建立妇科部并担任了妇科主任,是该院第一位担任科主任的中国人。1937年抗日战争爆发,王淑贞积极参加救护工作。抗战胜利后,王淑贞再渡重洋,为修复医院筹集捐款,于1947年完成医院的重建工作。1951年末,西门妇孺医院、上海红十字医院、中山医院的妇产科合并,改组为上海第一医学院附属妇产科医院,她出任妇产科医院院长、教研室主任,1952年晋升为教授,1979年兼任妇产科研究所所长,1984年起任妇产科医院名誉院长。
王淑贞从事妇产科专业60年,为我国妇女保健和医疗工作呕心沥血。40年代,她设立内分泌门诊,举办内分泌学学习班,培养了不少妇产科内分泌人才。50年代初期,她开设肿瘤门诊和病房,使医院的宫颈癌根治手术、子宫内膜癌及输卵管癌等的治疗效果均达到国际水平。1958年她代表中国妇产科学界出席了苏联第十次全苏妇产科医师代表大会,并在大会宣读论文《原发性输卵管癌》,受到与会者的好评。50年代中期,她开设产道异常门诊,首先开展腹膜外剖宫产和我国妇女骨盆外测量数据等,引起国内妇产科学者的重视。60年代初,她将宫内节育器应用于临床进行研究,为这一避孕方法推广至全国奠定了基础,1963年担任第一届全国计划生育委员会主任。
王淑贞先后编写专著多种:1960年主编的《妇产科学》,此书是我国第一本高等医学院校妇产科学经典教科书,获全国科学大会奖;60年代,她参与《辞海》医学部分妇产科学的编写;1979主编的《妇产科理论与实践》获上海第一医学院科研成果奖及全国优秀科技图书奖;还主编了中国医学百科全书《妇产科分卷》、《实用妇产科学》等。担任全国第一~第三届人民代表、第五届全国政协委员、上海市妇联副主任、历任中华妇产科学会副主任委员、中华妇产科学会上海分会主任委员、中华医学会总会理事及中华妇产科杂志编委等职。
王淑贞教授还是一位非常热爱生活的女性,在她的身上,不仅能看到中国女性特有的温柔典雅,还能看到受过西方教育的印迹,她身上洋溢着女性特有的魅力。
Shuzhen Wang, MD
(1899.5 ~ 1991.11) Dr. Shuzhen Wang, the eminent professor of Shanghai Medical University, was one of the founders of modern obstetrics and gynecology in China. In August 1918, she obtained the Boxer Indemnity scholarship from Tsinghua University to pursue her overseas study in the United States. She got her Bachelor of Science in the University of Chicago in 1921 and then Medical Doctor from the Johns Hopkins University in 1925, thus becoming the first female physician supported by this scholarship.
Dr. Shuzhen Wang returned to her motherland in 1926 with a strong desire to save her people and country with her medical knowledge and skills. She came to work at Shanghai Magarret Willianson Hospital and set up the Department of Gynecology, where she served as the Chief. She was the first Chinese Chief Gynecologiest working in this hospital. When the Anti-Japanese War broke out in 1937, Dr. Shuzhen Wang actively participated in the rescue operations. After the defeat of Japan, Dr. Shuzhen Wang went overseas again to raise funds for hospital repairing and reconstruction, which was completed in 1947. At the end of 1951, the hospital was restructured as the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Shanghai Medical College with the merging of Magarret Willianson Hospital, Shanghai Red Cross Hospital, and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from Zhongshan Hospital. Dr. Wang served as its President and Chairman of the Teaching and Research Unit, who was promoted as professor in 1952. In 1979, she became the Director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Research Institute. Then in 1984, she retired as the honorary president of the hospital. Dr. Shuzhen Wang engaged in the professional service of obstetrics and gynecology for over 60 years and dedicated her life to the progress and development of women's healthcare in our country. In 1940s, she set up the endocrinology clinic and organized several workshops to train many talents in gynecological endocrinology. In the early ‘50s, she started oncology clinic and wards in the hospital, so that the outcome for radical therapy of cervical cancer, endometrial cancer and fallopian tube cancer in our hospital was up to the international standards. In 1958, she attended the 10th Soviet Obstetrics and Gynecology Congress and presented her paper on "Primary Carcinoma of Fallopian Tube", which was welcomed by the participants. In the mid ‘50s, she set up the clinic for abnormal birth canal, in which she was the first to carry out extraperitoneal C-section and establish the parameters on pelvic measurements for Chinese women which draw great attention by other Chinese scholars. In the early ‘60s, she studied the clinical application of IUD, which has laid down the foundation for the nationwide use of this contraceptive approach. In 1963, she served as the first director of the National Family Planning Commission.
Dr. Shuzhen Wang has many academic publications in her speciality. She served as editor-in-chief of "Obstetrics and Gynecology" in 1960.This was the first classic textbook of Obstetrics and Gynecology for medical schools in China, which received the Award at the National Science Conference. In the ‘60s, she involved in compiling the medical section of obstetrics and gynecology in "Ci Hai" (Search All Words). In 1979, Dr. Wang was the editor-in-chief of "Theory and Practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology" published by Shanghai Medical College, which received the award for its outstanding achievements and National Science and Technology Publication Award. She as also the editor-in-chief of the “Special Volume of Obstetrics and Gynecology” in “China's Medical Encyclopedia”, "Practical Obstetrics and Gynecology" and so on. She served as the representatives at the 1st, 2nd and 3rd National People’s Congress, member of the 5th CPPCC National Committee, Deputy Chairman of the Shanghai Women's Federation. She also held the positions as the former Vice Chairman of Chinese Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Chairman of Shanghai Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Executive Board Member of China Medical Assocaiton, and member of Editorial Board for Chinese Medical Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Professor Shuzhen Wang also enjoys life with love and care. She is realy a good example for a successful professional woman. From her, you can not only to see the unique softness and elegance of Chinese women, but also the charm and dedication cultivated from her education in the West.
